Volunteer Program Volunteers are the backbone of the Leacock Foundation, because without them, our programs would not be a reality! Interested applicants for any of these programs should contact Judy MacLellan, Triangle of Hope Program Director: Canadian Certified Teachers in South Africa Leacock supports our Get Ahead Project Schools in South Africa by sending Canadian certified teachers to both the Whittlesea and Queenstown GAP schools. Teachers live with two other Canadian teachers in a three bedroom home on the grounds of a beautiful, secure Bed and Breakfast establishment right in Queenstown. Volunteers stay for a minimum of six months (January to June; July to December) and become a vital part of the school community while they are there. Leacock pays the return airfare and housing costs; the volunteers pay for their food, entertainment and any additional personal travel costs. Learn more about the Get Ahead Project School here. Summer Literacy Camps in Toronto During the month of July the Leacock Foundation operates literacy day camps for our partner TDSB schools in the Jane-Finch, St. James Town and Scarborough areas. Each camp runs for 4 weeks and offers students in Grades 2-6 small class literacy coaching in a camp environment. Morning classes focus on improving reading, writing and oral communication skills for children who have been recommended by their home schools. Afternoon activities provide experiential literacy and enrichment opportunities through field trips, guest speakers, arts and sports activities. Classes are run by certified Canadian teachers and supported by volunteer teaching assistants. Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age and must commit to a minimum of two weeks; preferably they are able to commit to the entire month of camp. Learn more about the TDSB School partners here. Toronto Partner School Volunteers The Leacock Foundation for Children runs programs throughout the school year at our Toronto partner schools in Jane-Finch, St. James Town and Scarborough. These programs range from homework clubs to public speaking, tutoring to dance just to name a few. Some programs run after school during the week while others are help on Saturday mornings. Volunteers are needed on a regular basis and must be able to commit to a weekly placement for a minimum of a school term. Leacock supporters are also involved in special connections with one or more schools. In the past individual volunteers can be partnered with a school to support special events, unique projects and ongoing needs at a particular school. |
