The Foundation
Club and Foundation History

The satirist Stephen Butler Leacock (1869-1944) delighted in poking fun at human folly.  He was also a distinguished academic who for more than thirty years chaired the department of political economy at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.  He was thus a man whose career combined humour and public service.

The Leacock Club is a community services organization that was founded in Toronto in 1992 and celebrates his example.  It raises money for disadvantaged youth, offering hope to people who have little, and to people who have everything, the chance to provide it.  Membership revenues are directed to and disbursed by the Stephen Leacock Foundation for Children, a registered charity and public foundation established by the Club in the same year.

Since its inception nearly a dozen years ago, the Leacock Club has raised and disbursed more than $1.48 million to various established children’s causes, and during its first decade in existence, 100% of the Foundation’s administrative expenses were privately underwritten.  This early record is and will continue to be a source of pride.  The Foundation mission is evolving and its activities are expanding, and the Board of Directors has decided it is now prudent to commit a maximum of 10% of its revenue toward expenses to ensure its ongoing and effective administration.
