Spring Into 2009: Celebrating Success
Leacock Events: The 10th Annual Leacock Debate was another fun evening held for the exclusive enjoyment of Leacock members this past February. Members who were unable to attend this year will soon be able to hear the event broadcast by U of T’s radio station CIUT soon (date to be determined).
We thank our Debaters for entertaining us. We also thank the evening’s host, Peter Oliver and the Leacock Debate committee of John Macfarlane, David MacFarlane, Bob Rae, Julian Porter and Ian Brown for their contributions to this popular event. This year’s motion was: “The short man is the better man.” Our moderator this year was Mr. Calvin Trillin. Our 2009 witty Debaters included:

The 6th Angus Glen/Leacock Gentlemen’s Tournament (Ryder Cup format) is scheduled to be played at Goodwood Golf Club on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009. Kevin Thistle’s Bold team holds a narrow three to two lead over Peter Oliver’s Brave team, but the team is determined to even the score this year. Leacock members interested in playing 36 holes of golf in one day should contact Alan Kouba immediately as each team consists of only 16 players and the spots fill up fast. Special Member Event: Don Tapscott, an internationally sought authority, consultant and speaker on business strategy and organizational transformation has generously agreed to speak at our annual member event. Stay tuned from more the time, date and location of this event, tentatively scheduled for June 2009.
Plans are now underway for the Annual Leacock Club Golf tournament, Dinner and auction, to be held on Monday, September 14th, 2009. This fun and fabulous tournament, now in its 16th year, is reputed to be one of the city’s best and takes place at beautiful Angus Glen Golf course, and Auberge du Pommier. The event traditionally nets the Foundation in the range of $150-$170,000 and we are very grateful to major sponsors American Express, Cadillac Fairview, Corby Distilleries Inc., Marriott Hotels of Canada and Enbridge for their past support.
We thank our amazing o-chairs Dick Smeelen (2008) and Joanne Pickard (2008-2009) and their team of intrepid volunteers for their hard work. We welcome back summer intern Marianne Bulger as the 2009 event coordinator.
